Martin Thulin - Into The Light (Ltd. Edition, Colored Vinyl)
Exploded View’s Martin Thulin is releasing his 2nd solo album, called Into The Light in April 2020.
Since 2016 he has focused on his band Exploded View, fronted by Anika (Stones Throw, Invada Records), which has released three records so far on Brooklyn based Sacred Bones. He has also produced three albums for the San Diego group Crocodiles, but now it’s time for new solo material.
First out is the single Thin White Duchess, a song about the fragility of life, as death lurks anywhere around the corner. Whereas that is your otherwise healthy cat suddenly falling ill or a brutal earthquake, like the one that hit Martin’s hometown Mexico City in September 2017. The title is obviously a hint to David Bowie’s 1975 persona, but it’s about Martin’s cat James, featured pinup on the debut album cover, which suddenly started to lose weight and was close to passing away. Unexpected events like illness and earthquakes make you reflect over your own death and your relation to it. Right now we hear about Coronavirus all over media.
Into the Light is a nostalgic and introspective album but at the same time it’s also about breaking loose and leave the past behind you, to forward into the light, but it’s obviously a word play as go into the light could also mean death. The music maybe doesn’t sound like the it’s two mayor influences, The Cure’s Faith and Nico’s The End, which Martin claims where among the few albums he could listen to during the making of this record, Martin’s music is far more electronic, sometimes with nods to Kraftwerk, but maybe it has a bit of that darkness and European nostalgia which those two albums have.
The debut I’d Rather Be a Shadow than a Shadow in the Dark was an obscure record released on vinyl only in 2013, which finally was made available digitally in December 2019.
Martin Thulin, a swede lost to Mexico, has a long career as a musician and producer. He helped creating an indie scene in Mexico in the 2000’s producing many local bands including Titan, Silverio and Jessy Bulbo among others and not to forget the four albums he did for his former band Los Fancy Free.
Thin White Duchess will be follow by a video mid February and three more singles up to the release of the album, both on vinyl (limited edition)and digital, in April 2020. There will be a pre-sale of the album in several digital stores including Salvaje Music Store, which co-release Into The Light together with Martin Thulin. Salvaje Music Store just opened a physical store in Mexico City end of 2019, in the hip neighborhood Roma Sur. The artwork for the singles and the album is maybe by the Mexican artist Omar Barquet.
Fecha de salida: 18 de abril de 2020.
